Soviet Medals, Badges and Pins

The reverse often carries more authentication evidence than the decorated front.

Soviet Medals, Badges and Pins

Front, reverse and suspension

Record enamel, relief, edge, reverse construction, fastener, ribbon and mounting method. A convincing front can be paired with a later screwback, replacement ribbon or unrelated suspension.

Is the group still together?

A medal group deserves a higher level of proof than a group of medals. Look for shared wear, consistent mounting, documents, photographs, names, serial research and a traceable chain of custody.

Do not clean away evidence

Aggressive polishing can remove plating, tool marks and accumulated evidence. Dust gently, isolate active corrosion and consult a conservator before treating enamel or ribbon.
